Common name: Samar Audio Design MG20

Production Status: In production

The MG20 is a transformer coupled small diaphragm cardioid condenser microphone that features very low noise, high SPL handling, natural timbre, smooth response and extended low end. The Samar MG20 design was conceived by the company’s founder, Dr. Mark Fouxman. The acoustical shape of the body shape allows for an excellent off-axis response and minimal phase distortion. The circuit uses a single jFet and a Samar transformer developed by Dr. Mark Fouxman specifically for this model and wound chambered (topology adopted in Neumann BV8 and some other expensive transformers) for very low capacitance and excellent high frequency response. It is assembled using US made 80% Nickel core lamination. This circuit is very similar to a classic KM84 with a few modern tweaks. The MG20 is suitable for wide range of applications, especially where a sibilance-free sound is paramount as in vocals, voice over, and podcast applications. It is equally well-suited for violins, brass instruments, mandolin, acoustic and electric guitars, drum overheads, percussions, orchestra, and choir.
