U 47 N

Common name: Neumann U 47 N

Production Status: Discontinued / Vintage

The U 47 N is the model name for the latest Georg Neumann GmbH U 47 microphones that were factory equipped with the 13 CW 4 nuvistor instead of the original Telefunken VF 14 M steel vacuum tube when it become unavailable. The power supply is still single voltage even if the original + 105 V DC is not enough to power these microphones. An increased voltage is required (+ 110 V DC) with increased current supply (55 mA instead of 40 mA). The power supply changes mean that the power required, from the PSU, by the microphone is increased. The VF 14 M equipped U 47 draws 4.2 Watts from PSU while the nuvistor version needs 6 Watts. There are no changes in cables or connectors so it is necessary to pay attention and check microphones to determine what vacuum tube is used. The original NG and NG 2 power supplies can be modified to power the nuvistor version. Mismatched powering can cause overheating in VF 14 M equipped microphones and malfunction in nuvistor equipped ones.
