Common name: Neumann TLM 170 R

Production Status: In production

The TLM 170 R is a large diaphragm transformer-less microphone manufactured by Georg Neumann GmbH from 1993. It replaced the previous TLM 170i from which it differs because of the remotable polar pattern control, available through a standard XLR-3 cable using a dedicated power supply unit (N 48 R-2 – N 248). The transformer-less technology features extremely low self-noise and an impressive dynamic range (130 dB). Five directional characteristics are available through a six positions rotary switch. The first five positions provide direct polar pattern control when the microphone is powered without a special unit. In the sixth position, marked “R”, the directional patterns can be controlled remotely with the dedicated power supply. The capsule is the K 89 developed in 1979 for the U 89 microphone. The microphone has a rotary arm on one side for stand mount coupling. The microphone has switchable – 10 dB pad and low-cut filter. At the beginning the microphone was only available in dark matt but later on was also made available in satin nickel finish.  Stereo sets are available too.
