The Western Electric 630 was a development of the WE618 omni moving coil microphone. It also appeared in the guise of the STC4021 (pictured), widely used by the BBC from the mid 1930s and for several decades after. The spherical shape and the circular (Romanov) baffle – source of the apple-and-biscuit nickname – were introduced to improve off-axis response to HF.
