The UT Twin48 is a large diaphragm tube condenser microphone recreating both the U47 and U48 polar switching options and sound characteristics. It is equipped with a custom and historically correct single backplate, dual diaphragm capsule optimised for 60V operation and with 24k gold-sputtered on 6 micron Mylar membrane. The 47 mode offers both cardioid and omnidirectional polar patterns while the 48 mode has cardioid and bidirectional polar patterns. The 47 mode achieves the cardioid response by decoupling the rear diaphragm and resulting in more sensitivity for a louder output and brighter frequency response. The 48 mode achieve the cardioid response by polarising the front and the backplate with the same voltage and resulting in a lower sensitivity and a closed in, warmer tone. The UT Twin48 features a US-made, custom UT-BV8 transformer wound to the Braunbuch specifications and same high-nickel alloy laminations historically used with a Faraday shield to reduce radio frequency interference. The power supply is fully discrete with individually isolated discrete rails for filament, B= and polarisation voltages. A custom US-made Sparkos Laboratories regulator is used for the filament voltage and a Zener diode for the high voltage rails. Custom US-made resistors and high quality electrolytic capacitors are used throughout together with a linear supply transformer. The power supply also features an inline EMI/RFI input filter and a selectable RF filter on the audio output. Includes shock-mount, vintage style briefcase, power supply and Sommer Cable Octave microphone cable.
