Neumann KMR 81iThe KMR 82i is a long shotgun microphone manufactured by Georg Neumann GmbH in 1978. This microphone is a real reference in the pro audio industry. It uses a pressure gradient interference transducer with an MCF (Pe/G) diaphragm (KK 82 capsule). It is engineered for long distances, with a lobe directional pattern suitable for a 45° pick-up angle, in which the frequency response is virtually constant, giving the advantage that a sound source, for example, an actor on stage, will not change the tonal balance when moving within this area, only the level will change. The frequency response is flat up to 2 kHz, with a treble boost for higher frequencies compensating for HF attenuation over long-distance pickup. The microphone incorporates a high pass filter to suppress subsonic interference and the filter is switchable to 120 Hz when it is used at a close distance, to compensate for proximity effect. A further switchable electronic filter is available to minimise sibilance when close miking speech. The KMR 82 is available in both nickel and dark matt finish. The KMR 82 was originally manufactured with either a Tuchel 3-pin or XLR-3 connector (“i” version). Today it is only available in the “i” version. Although engineered to be used mainly for movie and broadcast applications, the KMR 81 can also be very helpful in some other applications e.g. like as a spot microphone for a soloist in front of an orchestra or to pick up sound sources in noisy environments. The microphone is very light (250 g) and well balanced to be used easily for hours with fish-poles.
