The BLM 3 is a boundary-layer microphone capsule with a hemispherical polar pattern. The capsule can be connected to any microphone amplifier of the Colette series (except battery operated models). The capsule is placed off-centre of the 5 mm thick plate. The plate is relatively heavy to avoid structural borne vibrations (for example footsteps on a Foley stage). The off-axis sounds encounter very little frequency discrimination. Sound coloration is low, even for moving sound sources because the frequency response is essentially the same for all angles within the hemispherical pickup pattern. It is ideal for Television and Film, pickup of stage dialogue, or in orchestra pits, as an ambience microphone and for special public address applications. Since the microphone may well be used on the floor, the likelihood of damage from its being stepped on has been reduced by careful design and construction. As a rule, the capsule will not be harmed by normal footwear.
