Common name: Neumann U 89 i

Production Status: In production

The U 89 is a large diaphragm microphone manufactured by Georg Neumann GmbH from 1980. It belongs to the “fet 80” series. The microphone has the classic cone-shaped body derived from U 67 and U 87 but in a smaller size. A new capsule the K 89 was designed. This was also used for the TLM 170. The K 89 employs a medium diaphragm and features several improvements in regard to polar performance and frequency response (in all patterns). Omnidirectional, wide-cardioid, cardioid, hyper-cardioid and bidirectional polar patterns are selectable through a rotary switch. The microphone tone is constant in all polar patterns and the K 89 capsule response is excellent in diffuse-field application, giving top-quality results in reverberant environments. Moreover off-axis sounds are uncoloured. The microphone has a max SPL of 134 dB that can be increased to 140 dB through the 6 dB PAD switch. A further rotary switch controls a low-frequency filter (80 Hz or 160 Hz) for rumble or proximity effect control. The U 89 is a real general-purpose professional device, combining the best features of small and large diaphragm microphones, in a classic transformer output design.
