KM 184 D

Common name: Neumann KM 184 D

Production Status: Discontinued / Vintage

The KM184D is a digital preamplifier version of the original KM series fitted with a K40 cardioid capsule. KM183D (omnidirectional) and KM185D (hypercardioid) versions exist too. The design uses the Solution-D conversion process and either simple Connection Kits or the more sophisticated DMI-2 interface. Connection Kits offer preset sample rates to AES/EBU or to SPDIF and have plug-in or battery supplies. The DMI-2 allows selectable sample rates, external synchronization and remote control of gain and other functions. A Solution-D digital microphone system is made up of one or more digital microphones, a Digital Microphone Interface (DMI) and the Remote Control Software (RCS) which allows the remote control of the microphones. A PC or Mac can be used as the control computer, as well as DAW for recording. A DMI allows connection to all subsequent devices that have an AES/EBU interface. As an alternative to a DMI, a Connection Kit can be used to connect Solution-D microphones to the AES/EBU or S/PDIF interface of a recording system. If a Connection Kit is used the microphone functions cannot be remotely controlled.
